The Art of the Summer Evening Wedding
Don’t get sucked into thinking that your wedding day needs to follow the traditional timelines. It should feel personal to you as a couple, conventional wedding formalities do not suit everyone! Especially for a summer wedding, where celebrations can be full of life and continue beyond the sunshine.
It’s the little details that truly create the atmosphere and the memorable moments for your guests. The list of possibilities is endless but here are some of my favourite ways for making your big day less formal and more memorable!
Create moments not just a schedule
Find a venue that can facilitate a late ceremony time, make use of your time in the sun and extend your pre-ceremony celebrations. This will also give your guests time to settle in and the chance to socialise without feeling hurried along.
Take advantage of Golden Hour! Why not host a golden cocktail hour? Pick his &nhers signature cocktails that are personal to you and leave your guests feeling refreshed before the evening reception begins.
Create a comfy cozy space for yourselves and your guests, there are plenty of suppliers out there that have luxurious sofa sets available to hire. These spaces will offer a unique alternative to traditional seating.
Think outside the box, there are lots of venues that already provide unique spaces like these for your guests from floral gardens to firepits.
Embrace the summer atmosphere
Plan to celebrate those special moments outside under the glorious sunshine, most venues will be able to offer an outdoor ceremony space. This can help create a smooth transition into reception drinks and canapés by remaining outdoors and not having to worry about moving in between spaces.
Make the most out of the extended daylight allowing your celebrations to evolve naturally into the evening. Lighting and musical entertainment can transform the atmosphere as the daylight begins to fade.
Pose for photos in beautiful golden lighting! Plan your photos with your photographer around the time the sun sets for flattering portraits in softer summer evening lighting.
Seasonal Styling
Bring the feeling of a summer destination wedding a little closer to home, borrow inspiration from weddings set with Mediterranean, Italian or Greek backdrops. These themes bring a beautiful feel to your day and hosts opportunities to incorporate elements such as elegant linen and social dinning.
Recently, we had a wedding that took inspiration from Italy and themed their entire wedding around lemons, from décor to bespoke lemon flavoured mocktails!
When we think of British summer sun, most people will also think of summer florals. Whether this is vibrant wildflower meadow boxes or rustic pastel coloured bud vases, adding in flowers will instantly brighten your wedding space.
Now, filling these spaces with beautiful floral displays can sometimes stretch the budget, but there are lots of other options to explore like silk flowers that still give the same luxurious look.
Lighting is equally as important when planning your seasonal styling, even though your daylight hours are a little longer you may still want to add to the atmosphere once the sun has set.
The most popular options I have seen are fairy lights, lanterns both floor and hanging paper ones. These types of lighting add warmth and character creating a beautiful setting for your perfect summer evening.
Make drinks a highlight
Transform your drinks to perfectly match with your summer wedding, put a frozen twist on your favourite cocktails and serve them as slushies. These will keep your guests refreshed for longer and the perfect way to have a moment to cool off!
Classic summer drinks often prove to be popular among wedding guests. Especially in the sunshine, a refreshing Pimm’s and lemonade or a variety of spritz cocktails go down a treat! Along with seasonal fruit garnishes, this is a lovely way to bring a little flavour of summer to your reception drinks!
Rethink Your Wedding Menu
Have you considered venues that have an American-style slow smoked barbecue or suppliers that can provide live cooking stations? These are great options if you are rethinking your Wedding Breakfast menu to work alongside your less formal wedding plans as they provide a more relaxed and sociable approach to your dining experience.
A smokehouse feast would be my personal choice of menu and can still feel just as indulgent as a traditional three-course menu.
Entertainment Beyond The Dance Floor
There are some extra ways to entertain your guests naturally that capture the spirit of summer. Consider suppliers that hire out a wide selection of lawn/garden games or some venues that may even supply their own. This is a perfect way to informally add a touch of entertainment into the day and could also encourage a few competitive memorable moments.
Live music is another great way to add in that extra layer of entertainment or elevate what you already have in place. I have seen a fair share of saxophonists and other musicians play sets alongside the DJ, some even on roller skates!
If you prefer a more laid-back feel, then there are also lots of acoustic musicians that can bring your idea of a chill summer evening to life.
How can you make the most of long summer evenings at your wedding?
The secret is to combine all of the little details together that will make a summer evening feel special. You have the freedom to enjoy a full day of celebrations without the restrictions of the traditional formalities.
Embrace the seamless flow from day to evening by creating the perfect day that feels effortless and not rushed for your guests. Picture lounging on a boutique sofa set, frozen cocktails in hand and dancing the night away under the stars surrounded by your closest friends and family.
My Advice
Don’t be discouraged if the normal weddings traditions do not match the type of day you wish to create. I firmly believe that it is better to organise a day that is more personal to you as a couple and better caters for your crowd of guests rather than following the normal trends.
These types of weddings are my favourite to manage as they are filled with personal touches and memorable features!
Happy wedding planning!
